Men's Merrell Sawtooth Review

I've worn these boots on week long backpacking trips through Yellowstone, Grand Canyon and Big Bend National Parks. They breath relatively well versus a full leather upper boot. The Vibram sole has excellent traction and is high quality. The boot is relatively water resistant, although it does not have a Gore-tex liner but water has never soaked through the boot.I really think Gore-tex liners are unnecessary unless you like to hike in very rainy areas.I've replaced the insoles with Spenco Backpackers for extra support under load. The only problem I've encountered is the rubber toe protection, which is part of the sole, has started to delaminate from the shoe. Great boot overall.

Exceptional - possibly the lightest weight hiking shoe. My feet do not tire at all.At the same time, feels rock solid so you are not losing anything in terms of support and proteciton.

Length is true to size as other timberland shoes, but the toe-box is a bit narrow, so if you have wide feet might be a squeeze.

I highly recommend it.All the high-tech features actually seem to work to create a great shoe.

KEEN Blackcomb Winter Boot - Women's Review

KEEN Blackcomb Winter Boot - Women's

This is my second pair of Keen winter boots, the first were Growlers; they were worn into the ground! This is a far better boot for me, the ankle support is more flexible and the fit across the bridge is easier to adjust so that it is snug where you want it and eases off where you want it and stays there. Growler lacing tended to slip in the metal loops. This boot holds your foot in place yet gives you toe wriggle room! I go by european sizes and would sugest to anyone getting them to go 1/2 a size bigger than your normal size. They are now the only boot I wear in a Tasmanian winter but I can also wear them comfortably right up to summer. A good boot makes your ankles knees and back happy and keeps your toes snug.....get happy feet, grab these boots!

Rub away your dreary morning eyes and slip on the Keen Women's Blackcomb Winter Boot with Nubuck leather for a refreshing morning hike. Walk through morning frost and stay dry with the Blackcomb's waterproof breathable barriers. When you get hot on your hike, a wicking nylon lining keeps your feet from getting soggy by drawing moisture away from your skin. Primaloft insulation keeps your toes cozy as you hike higher and through light snow. The Blackcomb's toe guard works as protection from spiky shrubbery and crusty snow. The compression molded EVA footbed absorbs shock from the frozen ground and works to maintain long-lasting comfort.

These are good for light hiking in good conditions. They have problems when they get wet. My first pair blew out the side seams on both boots the first time they got really wet (i.e. I fell in to a stream). I returned that pair. With the replacement pair the rubber toe guard seperated from the leather after I hiked in a light rain. I was hoping for a much better constructed boot for this price.

I was looking for some hiking boots that were waterproof to snowshoe in and these are perfect! They are so warm and comfortable that I've been wearing them everywhere.Perfect for winter in the Rocky Mountains. The boots did seem to run a little small, and I got a half size larger than I normally do in hiking boots.

Men's Merrell Moab Mid GORE-TEX® XCR® Review

Men's Merrell Moab Mid GORE-TEX® XCR®
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I've done a lot of hiking and backpacking, but I've never made an investment in really "good" hiking boots. Finally I decided it was time when I decided to go on a four day backpacking trip on the Appalachian trail last October. I couldn't afford the higher end boots ($160-250), so I settled on these as it was a brand I knew and they were the cheapest I could find with GORE-TEX and Vibram.

Now, EVERYONE, knows that you never, ever, ever go on a backpacking trip with new boots. Ever. I knew this, so I ordered these well in advance. Unfortunately ShoeMall (whom I ordered from) took a really long time to ship them, and they came less than a day before I had to leave. I didn't really have any choice but to wear them, so I splurged on some Smartwool socks (HIGHLY recommended--backpacking with them is a totally new experience) to try to alleviate the blisters.

Well, I never expected what I got. These boots were very, very comfortable. I have high arches and under-pronate--how they would work for people with other types of feet I can't say, but I suspect it wouldn't much matter.

The boots have good ankle support--not super, but good--and that was all I needed. I'm young and have strong ankles, and I'd rather have less weight than more support. I did sort of twist my foot once on the trip, but I was fine. People who need a lot of support might look elsewhere. This isn't a shortcoming of the product--it's just a characteristic.

The grip is excellent. That's to be expected, they have Vibram. I did slip a few times, but it was on really wet rocks, and it may have been, as my friend put it, a user issue.

As for the waterproofing, well, you could spend $300 and you wouldn't find a more waterproof boot. It rained the first and second days, and I never felt the tiniest drop of dampness. At one point I literally submerged my foot in a river to see if any water would get in. Nada.

Overall these boots have everything I want. They may not be perfect for everyone, but if you don't have special needs (like extra support), this is the best bang you'll ever get for your buck. As I said, I took these on a four day backpacking trip on the Appalachian trail without ever wearing them before. I had a 30 pound pack. On the last day I hiked 17 miles--lots of up and down. I didn't get any blisters. None. At the end of the last day I was starting to get a small hotspot on one foot, but that was all. I'm not suggesting you take these backpacking without breaking them in, but these are as comfortable as you'll get. Just make sure you invest in some good wool hiking socks as well.

Update: I've now had the boots for over a year and a half. I've hiked parts of the Appalachian trail, the high country above Zion Canyon, the grabens of Canyonlands NP, and the Grand Canyon. At the Grand Canyon I hiked from the south rim to the river and back in a day. It's a tad under 20 miles, with 5000 vertical feet of descent on the way down, and that same 5000 coming back up. When I got back up to the top my whole body ached--except my feet. These boots are light, supportive, and 100% waterproof. I've hiked hundreds of miles in them and they're still in great shape with no real signs of wear.

This is the third pair I have purchased. (as a back-up in case they discontinue the model because I love em.)I originally tried on multiple boots at REI.This model fit like a glove and I haven't tried any other boots since. The first pair was purchased in 1999 & lasted until 2007 when the sole started to separate from the uppers. (I never did any care for the boots)Second pair purchased 9/07 and still going strong. (I am using appropriate leather conditioners now) I have used these mainly for hiking trips varying from 1-14 days; 1-2 long trips and 3-4 day trips per year, carrying a large daypack over varied terrain: Mont Blanc & Torres del Paine circuits, Wainright across England etc. Most recent, 8/09, summit of Kilimanjaro. Never a blister, feet always dry, great ankle support and no issues with durabilty.Granted, I have not used them for hiking that involved carrying a heavy backpack, not because I don't believe they are up to the task, but I simply haven't done that type of travel in years. Highly recommend if they fit your feet.

Getting ready to spend a summer hiking about the vast unruly lands in the Southwest my husband and I bought these boots in his and hers styles.Overall we very much love them!Heeding some advice, we bought these boots a little bigger than we needed so we could accommodate the swelling that feet do throughout a day of walking/hiking.And since I have very sensitive toe nails that practically jump off at a rumor of trauma, I've been keeping a close eye on how they react to these boots. So far they're all intact!!They have proven waterproof so far, however one of the little metal insignia that are punched into the boots have fallen out leaving a hold about 3 mm in diameter - I'll try to find something to patch it later - but am disappointed that I'd have to patch $150 boots so soon. The only other thing that I don't like is that they bruise the backs of my ankles where the top of the boot meets them. Its not so bad that i can't wear them all day, but at night i can certainly tell that I've been wearing my Danners again.

I've owned 2 pairs of these now, and I'll never own another Blackhawk boot. Although initially I thought these were good boots, time has proven otherwise. In less than 1 year of wear on each set, the inner lining comes loose in the heel area and makes them uncomfortable to wear. The soles are dangerously slippery on anything wet, like tile or cement. The soles de-laminate from the cushion part of the boot. The protective borders crack around the toe. One set started cracking by the laces about midway up the boot. One set had the stitching on the tab to help pull on the boot on tear loose. I called Blackhawk twice for service, no real help. Finally got hold of their Customer Service manager, he tried to make me feel like all the issues were my imagination, and had no value as feedback, even though I was pleasant and trying to give them good information. After 4 years as an Army Ranger, I know a thing or two about boots, so Blackhawk boots are poor quality, as is their service.

I bought my first pair of these boots in October 2005 and just replaced them with another pair today (March 2007). The old ones had about 1700 miles on them and were getting a bit worn out. My job involves walking most of the day through people's yards and sometimes cross-country. These boots are light, comfortable right out of the box, and waterproof. In nearly 31 years on the job I've never had any boots as comfortable as these, and I've worn just about all the brands out there.

I'm also a backpacker and would recommend these for all but the toughest hikes.

I bought a pair of these last year to do a lot of hiking up at Mt Ranier. They were fine for about a quarter mile with a 35 pound backpack, but then their defect started taking its toll. The arch of the left shoe is so far back in the sole that it hits on the front portion of the ball of my foot.I didn't notice this problem when I was wearing them for day hiking, but as soon as I put on the pack, I wished I had bought something else.Rather disappointing considering they were highly recommended and supposedly made to specifically for a woman's anatomy.

Bought this shoe for to hike up Mt. Kinabalu, Sabah, Malaysia. Chose it for brand, styling, comfort and waterproof claim. Shoe needs a break in period as support structure quite different from regular shoes and takes getting used to. Shoe felt quite stiff but I appreciated this in the end as the terrain was quite rocky. Traction onmud and wet, smooth granite was good going up, but not going down. Hiked for a total of 14 hours, 8 hours of which in steady mild to moderate rain and sadly, the shoe is not as waterproof as claimed. My socks were wet and toes were cold.
I bought a size up as the Merrell's I tried ran small and narrow. A size up was enough to wear proper hike socks.
I would not recommend for women with medium to fleshy feet- unless they start selling the shoes with width options.

I have plantar fasciitis and love to hike so a comfortable shoe is priority number 1. I like these better than my Nike Shox. I also like being able to have dry feet so the waterproof feature was a must. Don't let the shoe store guy (who only hikes in the mall) convince you that the Gortex shoes are waterproof. All this means is that they won't come apart if they get wet. They're durable, yes, but with the breathable sides, step into a few inches of water and you'll have soggy socks. The shoe has to have the "Waterproof" plate on the side. After four or five sporting goods stores, this was the only boot that I could find that met this criteria. A lot of the other shoes were too pretty or looked like they could kick in the face of a bear if you were attacked. These were built for the trail and they're also very light.

Without the breathable sides, I was concerned about sweaty feet, but after 5.5 hours on the trail, I was pleasantly surprised. My feet didn't sweat. The socks I wore were Red Head and I believe these made a big difference. At the hiking stores you'll see a lot of thick, wool socks. The Red Heads I'm referencing are only thick on the sides and bottom. The remainder of the sock is thin and cool.

The price does seem a bit steep, but if you're a serious hiker and want these features, you'll have to spend the extra amount. Through my searching, there's just seems to be no alternative. I "saved" some cash one year and destroyed the boots on my first trip. So, I really just wasted money.

This boot is unbelievable.I have just returned from a week long trip to the Boundary Waters. This boot kept my feet cool and dry in the heat and warm and dry in the cool.It truly is waterproof. Many times I needed to step out of the canoe in water, never once did my feet get wet.The boots dried quickly when a spill did land me in water deep enough to be over the top of the boots. They provided the ankle support to easily traverse the narrow, rocky trails carrying a pack or canoe.I highly recommend these boots for any type of hiking/camping/outdoor activity. No "break-in" time was necessary, they were comfortable during the 12-14 hour days and not once did my feet ache or hurt during the trip.I would have rated these 10 stars if possible.
