Vasque Men's Kota Mid XCR Hiking Boot Review

Vasque Men's Kota Mid XCR Hiking Boot

what a price, you can't beat the Sportsman's Guide.
These boots look and feel great. They're very lightweight but feel sturdy. I haven't hit the trails yet but they have stood up to the salt and snow of Chicago winter so far. I have heard nothing but good things regarding Vasque's footwear and I am a believer so far. They're very similar to Merrells that I have owned in the past. Same exact vibram sole.
If you're one of those guys like me that sometimes wears a half-size bigger depending on brand, order the next size up on these. I wear either 11.5 or 12, I bought the 12s and they fit perfectly.

Only a 4 star rating b/c I haven't had them very long, but they probably deserve a 5.

100% utilitarian and light as a feather!Mine have not seen "rugged" use (as of the time of this writing), but handle my weight (240) with ease under urban conditions.Based on over-all build and other observations, these trekking poles are "tough as nails"; I see no issues on the trail either.Although not cheap, if you're weight conscious when camping/hiking, they are worth every penny.

BlackHawk® Men's Desert Ops Boots Review

BlackHawk® Men's Desert Ops Boots

I've owned 2 pairs of these now, and I'll never own another Blackhawk boot. Although initially I thought these were good boots, time has proven otherwise. In less than 1 year of wear on each set, the inner lining comes loose in the heel area and makes them uncomfortable to wear. The soles are dangerously slippery on anything wet, like tile or cement. The soles de-laminate from the cushion part of the boot. The protective borders crack around the toe. One set started cracking by the laces about midway up the boot. One set had the stitching on the tab to help pull on the boot on tear loose. I called Blackhawk twice for service, no real help. Finally got hold of their Customer Service manager, he tried to make me feel like all the issues were my imagination, and had no value as feedback, even though I was pleasant and trying to give them good information. After 4 years as an Army Ranger, I know a thing or two about boots, so Blackhawk boots are poor quality, as is their service.

Men's Merrell Outland Mid Waterproof Review

Men's Merrell Outland Mid Waterproof
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I have plantar fasciitis and love to hike so a comfortable shoe is priority number 1. I like these better than my Nike Shox. I also like being able to have dry feet so the waterproof feature was a must. Don't let the shoe store guy (who only hikes in the mall) convince you that the Gortex shoes are waterproof. All this means is that they won't come apart if they get wet. They're durable, yes, but with the breathable sides, step into a few inches of water and you'll have soggy socks. The shoe has to have the "Waterproof" plate on the side. After four or five sporting goods stores, this was the only boot that I could find that met this criteria. A lot of the other shoes were too pretty or looked like they could kick in the face of a bear if you were attacked. These were built for the trail and they're also very light.

Without the breathable sides, I was concerned about sweaty feet, but after 5.5 hours on the trail, I was pleasantly surprised. My feet didn't sweat. The socks I wore were Red Head and I believe these made a big difference. At the hiking stores you'll see a lot of thick, wool socks. The Red Heads I'm referencing are only thick on the sides and bottom. The remainder of the sock is thin and cool.

The price does seem a bit steep, but if you're a serious hiker and want these features, you'll have to spend the extra amount. Through my searching, there's just seems to be no alternative. I "saved" some cash one year and destroyed the boots on my first trip. So, I really just wasted money.

Danner Men's Vanish GTX Scentlok Mobr Hunting Boot Review

Danner Men's Vanish GTX Scentlok Mobr Hunting Boot
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
My first pair of Danner boots were given to me.When "good" work boots last me 1.5 years on average, the Danners lasted 6 years of terrible abuse before they even started to fall apart. They lasted another 2 years of worse abuse before they became so bad I couldn't wear them on a daily basis any more.Had I know that Danner would refurbish them, I'd have done that, but it was too late.

At that point, I had a back country hike coming up and I wanted a good, versatile shoe/boot that I could wear on a summer mountain hike or a fall/winter hunting trip.I wound up buying a pair of Danner Vanish GTX from the local Bass Pro Shop.

I soon wore them on a camping trip to try to break them in.I was afraid of blisters like I used to get in some other boots but suffered none.My feet would start to hurt very slightly on the sides, mostly between my ankle and toes. Not bad though.I did not get them perfectly broken in but it was a good start.

For the hike, these may have been a tiny bit bulky.Probably not the best backcountry hiking shoe because of the weight. To be honest, I haven't weighed them, but they are made more for hunting I think than hiking. To me that is more versatile so I'm fine with it.They aren't overly heavy though, and they offer a little ankle support while not being uncomfortable as I've found some taller boots to be.At first they can be tough to get on and off if you don't usually take the time to loosen the strings every time, but that's not a problem.

They offered great traction and I stubbed my toe on a few occassions but barely noticed thanks to the added protection on the toe.Additionally, they were waterproof all the way to the top.

We hiked 11.6 miles in approximately 6 hours our first day, in northwestern Montana.I carried approximately 45 pounds on my back. The next day I probably had 30 pounds and we hiked the same route back to the car, but got an earlier start so we took longer to do it.These boots, with a pair of Men's Outdoor Lightweight OTC Socks by Under Armour, left my feet feeling fine with no blisters and only a little bit of soreness as a result of my "ground pounding".

I've now worn these boots on 4 camping trips, 1 long hike, several short hikes, several hunting excursions, countless times to the gun range, and to work over half this year, and they feel more comfortable today than ever before.Furthermore, they don't seem to be getting even close to wearing out. These are great boots and I'm becoming a bigger fan of Danner products with each passing day. This is my second pair of boots from them that have been 100% every time I put them on.

I was initially excited that Oboz was in Bozeman, but quickly found out this shoe is made in China too. The associate said to go a half size larger and that was good advice. It has an "ahh" feeling when I first put them on, which is a big expectation when I buy hiking footwear. Rarely does the fit improve over time when it doesn't feel very good to start with. I am pleased with my purchase, but would like to buy domestic manufactured gear.

I am really impressed with this boot.I friend of mine told me about Oboz a few months ago and the success he had with them.I bought the Yellowstone's a few weeks ago for summer hiking and backpacking. The fit was perfect right out of the box. After a few hours of walking in them, the cuff softened up a bit and became even more comfortable. The footbed that comes with the boot is one of the better ones I have seen that comes "stock" with a boot.No need to upgrade the footbed. This will be my main boot for hiking and backpacking this summer.Given that it is waterproof, I will even use it for snowshoeing this winter.
