(More customer reviews)To meet my uniform and safety requirements working on a roads and trails crew for the National Park Service, I needed a dark brown steel toe work boot. I wanted something with a good lug sole to work in sand and mud, strong foot support, waterproof, insulated, and all leather to stand up to tromping through brush, scraping against rocks, and basically using them as outdoor work boots get used. It seems as though most boots that match those requirements are loggers, and I prefer a lower heel than logging boots typically have since I sometimes have to do a fair bit of walking during my work day, sometimes on pavement, sometimes on trails.
I needed a boot available in a wide size, and specifically with a wide toe box. Many logging boots I tried on in wide sizes had a narrow toe, which for me pretty much defeats the purpose. These boots have enough room for my toes to be comfortable.
I've had these things for about three months now, and I've worn them every work day and some off days since receiving them. I've used them working on sand dunes, on plain old dirt and grass, in marshes (though I tried to avoid testing the waterproofness to much by not stepping into soupy mud or water deeper than a few inches), lugging heavy tools and materials back and forth across job sites, climbing all over trucks and heavy equipment, running chain saws, and even doing some framing work where I had to walk back and forth across joists and stringers most of the work day.
I've got a few pairs of boots, including one other brand of boots that retail for about $250, and these are my favorite. They were comfortable right away, took about two weeks to really break in, and look like they're going to last for a good long time.
The only real catch is that as with any steel toe leather boot, you have to avoid catching the toe against anything sharp and hard, because it'll cut the leather. I've got a few dings in the toes now, not all the way through the leather, but little cuts that probably wouldn't have hurt a non steel toe boot. But I've also dropped pieces of lumber on my toes, and was pretty happy I was wearing steel toe boots when that happened.
I try to clean them up once every other week or so with an air hose to blow off the dust and dirt from the stitching, then some saddle soap with a toothbrush and sponge for the rest of the exterior, letting them air dry. They've got a few scuffs on them now but they clean up pretty good.
I wear them with various styles of Danner wool socks, and my feet are about as comfortable as I imagine feet can be when you're on them all day.
